Zoe Garoufalia spoke with Dr Eva Angenete to learn why her talk on the Core Subject Spdate for EBSQ Coloproctology examination: The New Guidelines on Diverticulitis is not to be missed at #ESCP2020.
Dr Eva Angenete is Professor of Surgery at Sahlgrenska University Hospital and University of Gothenburg. She received her colorectal surgical training at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.
Here are the key learnings from their discussion:
- Diverticular disease is a quite common condition, with acute diverticulitis being one of the most common reasons for emergency admissions to colorectal units.
- Until now, there has been no consistent use of terminology in various publications on diverticular disease, making communication about the disease difficult. What’s more is that several aspects in the management of diverticular disease have been challenged in recent years, like antibiotic treatment, prophylactic surgery, resection surgery in perforated diverticulitis and routine follow-up colonoscopy. This highlights the need for a pan-European agreement on terminology, treatment and follow-up of diverticular disease.
- The ESCP guideline committee has invited many European experts to participate in this guideline project using democratic Delphi process where all experts participate. This guideline will also provide the possibility for the members of ESCP to benchmark their treatment of diverticulitis to a European standard.
In conclusion, these guidelines will assist in the choice of treatment for complicated diverticulitis and also provide insight in prophylactic resection. Antibiotic treatment is no longer recommended in uncomplicated diverticulitis.
Don’t miss Dr Angenete’s presentation on Monday 21 September from 14:00-14:20.
