Anders Mellgren, Professor of Surgery and Chair of the Division of Colon & Rectal Surgery at University of Illinois, is joined by Head of Pelvic Floor Unit, Treviso Regional Hospital Italy, Giulio A. Santoro, at 2019’s ESCP Conference in Vienna to lead the pre-congress course, ‘11th Anorectal and Pelvic Floor Ultrasound Workshop’.

The course will share best practice and advances in ultrasound imaging of anorectal and pelvic floor disorders - addressing the rising importance of imaging to such disorders.

Delegates will gain valuable hands-on experience as well as come away with a basic understanding of ultrasonographic imaging techniques - 3D endoanal, endorectal, endovaginal and dynamic transperineal US.

Santoro explains why an educational focus on ultrasound imaging of anorectal and pelvic floor disorders is so important:

"Imaging is gaining a key role in the understanding of pelvic floor disorders. Non-invasive techniques not only provide a superior depiction of the pelvic anatomy but also yield unique dynamic information. 3D technology is on the front line in the diagnostic and therapeutic workup, and, due to the elaboration of images, achieves better accuracy in the diagnosis of these complex diseases.”

Three-dimensional endoanal, endorectal and endovaginal ultrasonography, and dynamic transperineal US (DTPUS) are nowadays increasingly used in clinical practice for patients suffering from pelvic floor dysfunctions - feacal and urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, obstructed defecation - and for patients with either benign or malignant anal and rectal pathologies, such as anorectal sepsis or anorectal tumours.
Mellgren adds:

“This year’s course will again include an interactive and practical session with video and review of clinical cases which has been welcomed by previous participants. In this way trainees can discuss specific details of the techniques and be shown how to manipulate and analyse 3D volumes.”

This course is ideal for all physicians who are involved or interested in pelvic floor disorders: colorectal surgeons, general surgeons, gastroenterologists, physiotherapists.

After the introduction from Mellgren and Santoro, the day’s programme will start with a session on ‘Normal ultrasound anatomy of the anal canal and rectum’. Throughout the rest of the day, attendees will hear from a number of other distinguished presenters, including Liliana Bordeianou, Sthela Murad-Regadas, and Pawel Wieczorek.

The 11th Anorectal and Pelvic Floor Ultrasound Workshop will run from 08:00 - 12:30 on Wednesday 25 September. Tickets are €90 Early / €100 Late / €110 On-site (if available).
