Aneel Bhangu, a Clinical Lecturer in Colorectal Surgery at University Hospital Birmingham (ST8 level), who sits on ESCP’s Cohort Studies Committee, has been named the ACPGBI ‘Young Coloproctologist of the Year’.
Bhangu said:
“I’m thrilled to receive this award from the ACPGBI. The competition amongst good friends and colleagues was very tough but the application process provided a valuable opportunity to reflect on my experience and achievements.
“I submitted my application for the award whilst splitting my time evenly between academic and clinical practice. The hospital sits within the University campus which offers an integrated approach to surgical research which is extremely beneficial.”
Bhangu works in a fast-paced colorectal practice which includes both early and advanced cancer, pelvic floor, complex inflammatory bowel disease and abdominal wall reconstruction.
His recent achievements include acting as the trainee lead on the ROCCS trial which tested the biologic mesh in 970 patients at the time of stoma closure. He also co-founded the GRANULE course – a training programme to help medical students and junior doctors recruit patients into research studies.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to have seen the GRANULE course grow into a funded programme and deliver mini-courses throughout Europe via the ESCP.”
Bhangu will join the British Journal of Surgery from September as the 2018-2019 Editorial Assistant at the same time as continuing his busy day job writing papers and grant applications.
