We are delighted to announce the fourth IPAA and Continent Ileostomy hands-on workshop (Kock Pouch and Modifications).
The workshop will take place at Amsterdam University Medical Centre and the Amsterdam Skills Centre in The Netherlands, 29-30 May 2025.
The Kock Pouch workshop is a training initiative by ESCP's European School of Coloproctology and EHTG (European Hereditary Tumour Group) to promote theoretical background knowledge and practical experience on the four different variants of a continent ileostomy.
We cordially invite experienced coloproctologists with a special interest in IBD and hereditary disposition to GI cancer to attend. Clearly, whilst an ideal ileoanal pouch may last for a lifetime, unfortunately in a substantial number of patients pouch failure is an issue. We will discuss controversial aspects of fashioning an ileoanal pouch and this year are very fortunate to welcome an exceptional faculty with four leading international experts (one from Sweden, two from USA and one from Germany) sharing their expertise. We will discuss how to fashion the original K-Pouch, S-Pouch and T-Pouch in addition to the Barnett pouch. Pros and cons of each will be openly discussed and surely debated among the faculty and participants! Since continent ileostomies offer excellent function and are experiencing a deserved revival we look forward to hosting this fourth workshop, after already a series of very successful courses in 2018, 2019 and 2023.
Management of these very special patients can only be successful if we cooperate closely with stomatherapists and nurses and we will continue to endorse and pursue structured patient care across Europe, together with the relevant associations representing these. We encourage building a tandem structure, so that combined applications of surgeons together with stoma therapists are strongly encouraged.
Therefore we invite stoma therapists, nurses and other interested parties to join the first (theoretical) day of the workshop at a very reduced rate, we would love to see you there!
Following last year’s first implementation, the global patient virtual meeting returns, allowing patients to share their experiences and thoughts among each other and also address any questions to the faculty and participants of the course.
On Day 1 of the workshop, we will discuss the relevant history and theoretical aspects of ileoanal and continent pouches, including evolution, indications for conversion, practical aspects of how they are individually fashioned and management. Pros and cons of each are theoretical and lack underlying evidence. For this purpose, we are initiating the global CI registry.
On Day 2 surgeon participants will join the cadaver course in the skills centre and actively fashion the different pouch variants under close guided supervision. One or two faculty members will be present for each cadaver. This is the first time we have a course with cadavers and this is a shift from the animal to the human model.
We would like to acknowledge Frankenman for the support of a required, specific medical device.
Introduction
This highly interactive expert two-day workshop is designed to teach and discuss both the ileoanal pouch (IPAA) and continent ileostomy.
Surgeons interested to participate in the programme will be selected according to selection criteria (see below). Additionally we most cordially welcome stomatherapists interested in ileostomas, virtual (ghost) ileostomies and continent ileostomies to join the first theoretical day on Thursday at a very reduced price. |
