Trial Description

Traditionally, surgical resection for Crohn's disease differs from oncological principles and the mesentery is preserved. This study sought to examine whether resection of the mesentery en bloc in suitable patients reduces post-operative recurrence. The primary endpoint is surgical recurrence. Secondary endpoints include endoscopic and clinical recurrence. This is a multi-centre study between Ireland, USA and China.

Full Research Summary

Objective:	This study seeks to determine if a complete mesocolic resection reduces recurrenc compared to a limited mesocolic resection.
Aim:	To establish whether complete mesocolic resection reduces recurrence risk in Crohn's disease.
Methods:	Patients will be invited to participate and informed consent obtained. After laparoscopy or laparotomy, the surgeon will determine whether a hemostatic division of the mesentery is technically possible.If it is, the envelope containing the randomization can be opened to find out what group the patient has been randomized to, and the operation proceeds as per the group allocation to either a mesenteric-based resection or conventional resection.
