After the great international success of the TENTACLE – Esophagus and TENTACLE – Rectum study, the TENTACLE – Colon study is now about to go live!
Anastomotic leakage is a common and severe complication after colon cancer resection. Recent literature reports leak rates up to 8% and substantial associations with morbidity and mortality. Current treatment decisions are mainly based on clinical presentation and surgeon experience since large comparative studies on treatment strategies are lacking.
To address this gap, we are excited to introduce this international multicentre retrospective cohort study aiming to evaluate various treatment strategies for anastomotic leakage. We also aim to develop prediction models for 90-day mortality and a combined endpoint of Clavien-Dindo grade 4-5 morbidity, in which patient, tumour, resection and leakage characteristics will be included. Furthermore, we will try to identify different clinical entities of colonic anastomotic leakage and evaluate how timing of diagnosis and subsequent treatment affects outcome. This unique project will fill several knowledge gaps in this field of research and will likely help clinicians worldwide in making optimal and personalized treatment decisions to enhance patient care.
We invite you to join us in this study. Collaboration means we ask you to enter data from patients with an anastomotic leakage after colon cancer resection into the joint database. All (up to 4) collaborators from each participating centre will be granted corporate authorship under the name ‘The TENTACLE – Colon Collaborative Group’. Together, we can make a substantial impact on the lives of those with anastomotic leakage after colon cancer resection.
